Windows ME - Making a Connection to the Toronto Free Net
1. Make a new connection
Double-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop
Click the "Dial-up Networking" link
Double-click "Make New Connection"
Type "TFN" in the "Name" field; click "Next"
Enter the telephone #: 416-645-1999
Make sure the Area Code is 416 and that the Country Code is Canada
Click "Next", then "Finish"
2. Configure the new connection:
Highlight the new "TFN" icon with a single click
On the menu bar, click "Connections", then "Settings"
Both checkboxes should be checked
click "OK"
Make sure the "TFN" icon is highlighted; on the Menu bar click "File", then "Properties"
On the "General" tab, your modem should appear in the "Connect using" field
Click the "Configure" button
On the "General" tab, under "Maximum speed", select 57600
Click "OK"
Click the "Networking" tab
You should see "PPP, Internet, Windows 2000/NT, Windows ME" under "Type of Dial-Up Server"
Remove all checkmarks except "TCP/IP" at the bottom
Click the "Dialing" tab
There should be a checkmark beside "This is the default Internet connection", and a dot beside "Always dial my default connection"
Click "OK"
3. Check dialing properties:
Double-click the "TFN" icon
Click the "Dial Properties" button
Make sure the area code and country code are correct.
Normally the fields "For local calls, dial __ " and "For
long-distance calls, dial __ " should be empty
If your telephone line has Call Waiting, check the appropriate box. To disable it, dial "*70,," (two commas). If you do not have Call Waiting, make sure there is not a checkmark in the box.
click
the "Area Code Rules" button
make sure there is a checkmark in the checkbox beside "Always dial the area code (10-digit dialing)"
Click "OK", then "Cancel" the dialup connection
Close "Dial-up Networking" and return to the Windows desktop
4. Check Control Panel Settings
Click the Start button, --> Settings --> Control Panel
Double-click the "Network" icon (if you do not see a "Network" icon, click the "view all Control Panel options" link)
On the "Configuration" tab, for most people the only essential
components are "Dialup Adapter" and "TCP/IP".
"Client for Microsoft Networks" and "Microsoft Family Logon" are
usually present - just leave them there. You may also see other
components, such as Ethernet if your computer has a network card.
Other protocols such as "IPX/SPX" and "NetBEUI" should be removed if
they are present but not needed.
Highlight "TCP/IP" (If you have more than one instance of TCP/IP,
select "TCP/IP --> Dialup Adapter")
click the "Properties" button, click "OK" if there is a warning dialog
box
"DNS Configuration" tab: "Disable DNS"should be selected
Click "OK" & "OK"
Close Control Panel
5. Configure Internet Explorer
Click with the right mouse button on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, then click "Properties". If you see several tabs along the top, proceed directly to "General" tab below.
If you see only two tabs at the top, start Internet Explorer (double-click the desktop icon, or click on the small icon in the Quicklaunch toolbar beside the Start button, or use the Start | Programs menu); click the "Work offline" or "Cancel" button
(At this stage, a "wizard" may start: if so, you may proceed with
it, using the following information, or else follow the procedure
below.)
Click Tools | Internet Options
"General" tab: Home Page address is http://www.torfree.net
"Connection" tab:
"TFN default" should be visible in the "Dial-up Settings" window
"Always dial my default connection" should be selected
"Perform system security check before dialing" should be checked
Click the "Settings" button; in the "user name" field type your login
Click "OK"
Programs tab: in the "E-mail" field, make sure Outlook Express is selected
Click "Apply" & "OK"
6. Configure Outlook Express
Start Outlook Express (click the Outlook Express icon in the
Quicklaunch toolbar beside the Start button, or click Start --> Programs
--> Outlook Express) and work offline
At this stage, a "wizard" may start: you can either proceed with
it,
using the information below, or cancel it & use the following
instructions
Click "Tools" in the menu bar, then "Accounts"
Click the "Mail" tab
If there are accounts listed (e.g. from previous ISP services) that are no longer relevant, remove them
If there is a TFN account and you wish to edit its properties, select it, then click the "Properties" button
If there are no accounts listed in the window, click the "Add" button,
then "Mail", and follow the wizard using the information below
"General" tab:
"Name" - how you want your name to appear when you send mail
"E-mail address" - your own (yourlogin@torfree.net)
"Mail Account" is a "friendly name" we suggest "TFN Mail"
"Reply address" - leave blank
"Servers" tab - type of server is POP3
"Incoming mail (POP3)" - pop.torfree.net
"Outgoing mail (SMTP)" - smtp.torfree.net
"Account name" is your login
leaving the password field blank and the "Remember password" checkbox empty provides security (instead, you can enter the password manually when you check email)
NO checkmarks beside any lines that refer to authentication
"Connection" tab:
"Always connect to this account using" should be checked; "TFN" should be visible in the field below
Click "Apply" & "OK"
Click "Tools" in the menu bar, then "Options"
"Connection" tab: No checkmark beside "Hang up"
Click the "General" tab - place a checkmark beside "When starting, go
directly to my ‘Inbox’ folder"
Click "Apply" and "OK"
7. Close all programs and restart the computer.
To connect to the Internet, double-click the "Internet Explorer" icon (for Web browsing) or the "Outlook Express" icon (to go directly to email) on the desktop, or click once on the appropriate icon in the Quicklaunch Toolbar beside the Start button.
Type your password in the dial-up connection window & click "Connect"
You may hear dialing and noise from the modem (the "handshake"), then see a "verifying password" window. A small icon that looks like two linked computers should appear near the clock, indicating that you’re connected.
If you’re using Internet Explorer, the Toronto Free Net Home Page should
appear. If you’re using Outlook Express, you may be prompted to enter
your password again to access new mail.
To disconnect without closing the program, right-click on that icon, then click "Disconnect".
