About PPP Access

The Toronto Freenet ("TFN") provides a 56K graphical PPP service for you to access and enjoy the internet in full colour. Access your email, the world wide web, and other services with popular software titles like Eudora, Netscape, and ICQ.

Accessing the TFN (in PPP mode)

To access the Toronto Freenet in PPP mode, you will need to setup your computer to dial into the TFN and establish a PPP connection. Most computers now include the necessary software for connecting in PPP mode. The phone number your computer will need to dial is: 416-645-1999.

Setting up for PPP

To connect via PPP, you will need:

    1. a valid TFN account
    2. a computer with a modem
    3. phone line plugged into the correct modem scoket (not the one marked phone- try both if not working)
    4. PPP connection software (most modern systems include this)

Getting the most out of PPP

To use PPP most effectively you need:

  1. a graphic Internet web browser such as Internet Explorer, Netscape or Mozilla
  2. an offline email reader/responder called a "mail client".
  3. an offline newsreader (if you are interested in Usenet news - beware)
  4. instant messaging or chat software (if you feel comfortable typing fairly quickly to communicate)
